Kids Yoga
Our fast moving, materialistic and competitive society affects adults and kids. The emotional and educational pressures society places on our children causes increasing amounts of stress, which they often struggle to process. This negatively influences their emotional and mental states, which, if not released, can cause ailments such as stress, nervous tension, insomnia, poor nutrition, depression and low self-esteem.
Yoga, through asana, pranayama and yoga nidra (deep relaxation), teaches kids to face life's challenges with steadiness and stability. It calms the mind and rejuvenates the body by creating balance in the nervous and endocrine systems - the first areas affected by stress.
"Our children live in a hurry-up world of busy parents, school pressures, incessant lessons, video games, malls, and competitive sports. We usually don't think of these influences as stressful for our kids, but often they are. The bustling pace of our children's lives can have a profound effect on their innate joy-and usually not for the better. I have found that yoga can help counter these pressures. When children learn techniques for self-health, relaxation, and inner fulfillment, they can navigate life's challenges with a little more ease." Marsha Wenig, creator of YogaKids.
Benefits of Yoga
- Encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a non-competitive physical activity which develops strength and increases flexibility.
- Fosters cooperation, compassion, acceptance and patience.
- Teaches kids awareness of the breath and to use techniques such as meditation and visualisation to deal with life's many challenges.
- Helps kids learn how to control their emotions healthily; improve self-discipline; build listening skills; and respect themselves and others.
- Studies indicate that kids who practice yoga choose healthier foods.
- Improves focus by quietening the mind. Studies from the University of Heidelberg in Germany and at the University of Sydney in Australia has found that a regular yoga practice helps combat ADHD.
- It's a fun way to get exercise! Doing playful yoga poses is a great, non-threatening way for kids to get moving and challenge their mind.
- Improves posture and relieves upper body tension from increased spinal pressure as a result of time spent sitting at a desk with a computer.
